BACKGROUND/RESEARCH: In 1999, scientists in Geneva, Switzerland, compared the ability of green-tea extract, caffeine, and a placebo to increase metabolism and burn fat in overweight individuals. They found that green-tea extract, which contains caffeine ‘as well as other compounds, increases the number of calories and fat burned beyond what caffeine alone can do. Another study, published in the March 2000 issue of Endocrinology, found that rats given EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate, a substance found in green tea) had a significant decrease in food intake and body weight. These scientists reported that “green-tea extract … could be of value in assisting the management of obesity.”

WHAT IS IT SUPPOSED TO DO: Green tea, unlike black tea, undergoes minimal processing, ‘which involves slightly steaming and then quickly drying the tea leaves. This method allows the green tea to keep its beneficial substances called polyphenols. One type of polyphenol is catechin, and the special catechin in green tea that promotes the burning of fat is called EGCG. Green tea also contains caffeine, which is both a stimulant and a diuretic. These substances work together to promote weight loss.

HOW TO TAKE IT: Experts believe an effective amount of catechins for weight management is 300 mg. The average cup of green tea contains 50 to 100 mg catechins; thus, depending on the potency of the tea you buy, experts recommend 3 to 6 cups of tea per day. If the green tea you buy only gives the polyphenol level, the amount of catechins is usually lower. You can roughly determine the catechin content by using the following example:-
To achieve 300 mg of catechin from an extract, you need approximately 480 mg of a 50:1 green-tea extract that contains 60 percent catechin (60 percent of 480 =300 mg).
SIDE EFFECTS: Because it contains caffeine, green tea may cause insomnia, restlessness, irritability, and heart palpitations if taken in excessive amounts.
PRECAUTIONS: Limit your use of green tea if you have a sensitive stomach, heart problems, an overactive thyroid, or kidney problems. Do not use green tea if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Too much green tea (more than 1.5 g per day) over a long time can cause insomnia, dizziness, heart palpitations, and irritability. Also avoid green tea if you are taking alkaline drugs, such as antacids and most antidepressants and prescription painkillers.
